What Is a Nylon Insert Hex Nut?

The nylon insert hex nut, also known as a nylon lock nut, is a fastener that uses a built-in non-metallic material to prevent loosening. Its core structure consists of two parts: the metal nut body and the nylon locking ring.

The metal nut body has a standard hexagonal shape on the outside and a continuous threaded hole on the inside for engaging with the bolt.

The nylon insert or locking ring is located at the top of the nut. It is an inner sleeve made of nylon plastic with an inner diameter slightly smaller than the pitch diameter of the nut's threads.

Anti-Loosening Principle

The anti-loosening principle of the nylon insert hex nut is not complicated, but it is very clever. When the nut is screwed onto the bolt, the bolt threads first pass through the standard threaded portion of the nut and then enter the nylon ring area. Because the inner diameter of the nylon ring is smaller than the outer diameter of the bolt, the nylon material is forced to deform and embed itself into the thread gaps of the bolt. The compressed and deformed nylon generates a continuous rebound force and significant friction against the bolt threads.

Once locked, the nut cannot be easily unscrewed. It has strong anti-loosening ability and vibration resistance, effectively preventing loosening caused by vibration or impact.

Easy Installation, No Special Tools Required

Unlike some complex anti-loosening solutions, the nylon lock nut is very simple to install. Operators can use standard wrenches or sockets to tighten it normally without any special tools or extra steps. This simplifies the assembly process and reduces installation time.

Reusable

Nylon insert hex nuts or nylon lock nuts can be reused, but their anti-loosening effectiveness decreases with repeated use. Within a reasonable range, they can generally be reused 20 to 40 times.

The nylon ring is typically in a noticeable color, such as blue, which is the most common. This enables quick identification on assembly lines, helping quality inspectors verify that the correct lock nut has been used and providing convenience for later maintenance.
